Piece 4. Wild card.

Thompson Rivers University Student Senator.

Skills gained: Governance, policy development, decision-making

Additionally, my experience as a Student Representative on the TRU Senate and Faculty Councils has given me a solid understanding of governance, policy creation, and decision-making processes. In this position, I actively engaged in high-level conversations that influenced the university’s academic and operational direction, representing TRU student community. I worked to make sure that all decisions were documented, open, and in line with TRU’s institutional goals, while also advocating for policies that valued education and inclusion.

Creating  reports based on Senate and Faculty Council meeting issues was an important contribution I made during my time there. These analyses provided useful information that the TRUSU University Affairs Committee and Student Caucus used to guide their advocacy campaigns and strategic planning. For example, my studies on academic policy changes and student appeal trends assisted these committees in identifying important issues for advocacy, such as strengthening mental health resources, transparency around budgeting and other academic detection – making practices.. This experience not only improved my ability to evaluate and communicate information effectively, but it also aligns with my overall goal for student advocacy.
