Salmon Project

Key skills and expertise: Storytelling, video editing, collaboration, cultural awareness.

I am currently participating in an ongoing project where I serve as an editor for a video that tells the story of the salmon shortage in the Nicola Valley region, the territory of the Scw’exmx people, due to an environmental crisis. This project is a collaborative effort to raise awareness about the ecological and cultural significance of salmon to the Scw’exmx community, as well as the devastating impacts of environmental degradation on their way of life. As an editor, I am responsible for shaping the narrative, ensuring the story is engaging and respectful, and highlighting the voices of community members who are directly affected by this crisis.

This project has helped me build excellent storytelling and video editing skills, allowing me how to bring  interviews, historical background, and visual components together to create a powerful and cohesive narrative. I’ve also gotten a better awareness of environmental justice and the necessity of including Indigenous perspectives into conversations about land, water, and resource management. Working closely with the Scw’exmx community has taught me the importance of cultural awareness and approaching storytelling with respect, to make sure the end result truly reflects their experiences and objectives.

In addition to my technical skills, this project has helped me improve my ability to handle partnerships. I collaborate with a  group of filmmakers, faculty, and community leaders to create a common objective. This has strengthened my communication skills, and a dedication to building trust and mutual respect between all parties.
